Flaxseed Oil provides

Flaxseed oil has a unique blend of the “good” fats: the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) omega-3 and linoleic acid (LA) omega-6. Essential fatty acids must be consumed through food or supplements, as they cannot be made in the body. Approximately 45-52% of the fatty acids in flaxseed oil are ALA, making it the richest plant source of this essential omega-3 fatty acid.1

Flaxseed oil also includes monounsaturated oleic acid (OA) omega-9, which is a non-essential fatty acid produced naturally by the body.

Daily Recommended Intake

A national survey shows that most Americans are not meeting these recommendations, with over 40% of adults not meeting the recommended intake for ALA.4

Recommended adequate intake of essential fatty acids varies between adult women and men. Omega-3 (Alpha-linolenic Acid) is 1.1 grams per day for adult women and 1.6 grams per day for men. Omega-6 (Linoleic Acid) is 12 grams per day for adult women and 17 grams per day for adult men.4

Flaxseed oil is a great way to get the recommended amount of ALA. It is the richest plant source of ALA3 and serves as a fish free source of omega-3 fatty acids.1 ALA can be converted by enzymes into common omega-3s found in fish oil (eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) omega-3 fatty acids). Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids helps support a healthy heart.

Food Sources

Flaxseed comes from the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum, and is virtually indigestible in its whole form. Ground flaxseed provides dietary fiber, lignans, micronutrients and omega-3 fatty acids.1

Common food sources that contain ground flaxseeds include cereals, breads, and granola.

Common food sources that are high in omega-6 include corn, soybean and sesame oils. For omega-9, it is olive and canola oils.
